Why
Afghanistan Matters
- Under George W. Bush, Afghanistan
went from bad to worse. Now, as
Newsweek has reported, Afghanistan could become President Obama’s
Vietnam – an unending conflict that could become an albatross around the
neck of a nation and president we all need to succeed.
- President Obama has announced
new thinking on Afghanistan, starting with a comprehensive review of our
strategy there. But he’s already escalated that conflict by sending 17,000
additional troops before that plan has been completed. To date, those
troops have received no clear mission and no exit strategy.
- U.S. and NATO forces in
Afghanistan are “the most important element driving the resurgence of
the Taliban.” And with those forces pushing insurgents into
Pakistan, risking the further destabilization of that nuclear-armed state, the
continuation of our current, failed policy could have global
ramifications.
President Obama faces immense pressure from inside and
outside the Pentagon to stay the course and continue Bush’s “Bring ‘em on”
foreign policy. Americans must act now
to stop the escalation of another never-ending war.

The first
principle for someone who finds himself in a hole is to stop digging. The US
policy 'hole' in Afghanistan is not Obama’s making, but it is important for the
president to consider if adding new US combat forces in Afghanistan, without a
new and comprehensive plan for US policy there, might be digging an even bigger
hole.
